Lakewood, Ohio
Alger Road
Named for the Alger family, among Lakewood's first settlers, who arrived in 1812 and formed what was long called the Alger Settlement.
The family pushed along the Detroit Indian path and its branch on Warren Road to settle near Lorain Road. Eldest son Henry Alger, 23 at the time, recorded the hardships: working days for a bushel of wheat, flour or salt and walking ten to twenty miles home carrying it; for almost two years the only cooking pot was a broken teakettle and food was often just potatoes and beans.
