Named For Lakewood

Lakewood, Ohio

Belle Avenue

VerifiedFounding families and early settlers

Named for Isabelle, only daughter of John Honam, a Scottish weaver who bought land along Detroit Road.

His land ran from Belle to Warren and north to the Lake, including today's Lakewood Park and St. Augustine's Academy. In 1838 he built a sandstone house at St. Charles and Detroit; in 1952 it was moved to Lakewood Park, restored and kept by the Lakewood Historical Society (one room honors Dr. Kirtland, whose grandson Charles Pease II married Honam's granddaughter Hester Hotchkiss).
