Lakewood, Ohio
Coutant Avenue
Named for Benjamin Coutant, a marble finisher and pattern maker from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1819.
Known as a mechanical genius, he was the first settler to cover his well and rig a bucket-filling device; children from the West 117th Street schoolhouse filled the school pail there. 'Uncle Ben' was good at checkers and chess and held a Sunday gathering in his kitchen, which grew into the West Cleveland Mission under First Congregational Church.
