Ethel Avenue

VerifiedFounding families and early settlers

Named for Ethel, daughter of Mathew Hall (joint entry with Edward Avenue).

Mathew Hall, brother of John Curtis Hall, built a small frame house at 16906 Detroit around the start of the Civil War, with hewn planks and whole-tree beams, still standing. He and second wife Margaret Curtis (also his cousin) raised Ethel and Edward there; in 1879 they moved into a Victorian home nearby later used by the Lakewood YMCA.
