Named in memory of Dr. C. Lee Graber, a Lakewood doctor who began practice in 1904 and started Lakewood Hospital.

Worried about care for bed patients, he mortgaged his own home to buy a frame building at Belle and Detroit holding fifteen patients. With help from physicians and friends the hospital was organized in 1907, soon became a non-profit run by citizens, and was accepted by the City in 1931.
