Granger Avenue

LikelyFounding families and early settlers

Named, the author says 'undoubtedly', for Gideon Granger, a U.S. Postmaster General under Jefferson who was an early land company purchaser and promoter.

As an original purchaser in the Connecticut Land Company he held large tracts in present Lakewood, Rocky River, Berea and Jefferson. He planned a town called Granger City for Rocky River, with today's Granger Avenue as its eastern edge. In 1805 he came to Cleveland for a conference with Indian chiefs about the land west of the Cuyahoga, and at the river mouth predicted a large city within 50 years; the book says he was off by about 100 years.
