Named for Richard Hilliard, a Cleveland businessman who owned 100 acres near Hilliard and Madison, though the book has no record of him living in Lakewood.

He came to the Western Reserve in 1820 from New York, started in wholesale dry goods and groceries, then speculated in land. He was Mayor of the Village (Cleveland) in 1830, an organizer or trustee of many civic ventures, and built a mansion on the site of today's Public Auditorium, where he lived until death in 1856.
