Named for Thomas Hird, an English immigrant of 1818 whose courtship of Hope Randal Lord, niece of wealthy landowner Richard Lord, ended happily.

Hird managed 320 acres of the Lord estate near West 117th Street; the family disapproved of his poor background, but he studied at night and persisted. Richard Lord gave him the 320 acres as a wedding gift. In 1852 he got a silver medal from the Board of Agriculture for the best wheat in Ohio.
