Lakewood, Ohio
Hopkins Avenue
Named for the family of Mathilda Hopkins, wife of Thomas Henry, who laid out the street in the 1870s-80s.
In 1876 Thomas Henry (a descendant of Patrick Henry) and Mathilda bought land near West 117th including a log cabin that had been a tavern with a 16-by-30-foot taproom; they converted it to a home for five children. Thomas, a spring maker, built a forging-shop cottage, later given to a daughter and still home to descendants.
