Kirtland Lane

VerifiedFounding families and early settlers

Named in 1961 for Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland (1793-1877), Lakewood's best-known 19th-century citizen: naturalist, doctor, legislator, teacher and writer.

He helped found the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Western Reserve Medical School. His farm ran from Madison to the Lake near Bunts Road, with a garden of rare plants (cypress, ginkgo, paulownia, Siberian beech). He bred strawberry, raspberry and cherry varieties named for him and the Kirtland Warbler was found there. He lived here about forty productive years; the lane was named 124 years after he built his small stone house on Detroit. Page also has a green aerial photo labeled Butler Air Survey, April 1962.
