Named for William R. Maile, an English brickmaker who started a brickyard in Lakewood and invested in land including this street.

He and his father had a Cleveland brickyard near Public Square washed out by rain; he moved to Lakewood, built a brick house at Detroit and Brockley, and was one of three trustees of the new Hamlet of Lakewood in 1889. The romance of son Christopher and Mary Kidd appears in The Lakewood Story.
