VerifiedFounding families and early settlers

Named for Mars Wagar, who bought land in the heart of Lakewood in 1820 for $7.00 an acre.

He was the first to build a stone house on Detroit (site of the Bailey Company), using local stone and amateur builders following a carpenter's manual. Neighbors on Detroit gradually replaced log cabins with similar stone homes; all are gone except the Stone House in Lakewood Park.
