Lakewood, Ohio

Wagar Avenue

VerifiedFounding families and early settlers

Named for the Wagar family; it was cut through the farm of Israel Dwelle Wagar, eldest son of original settler Mars Wagar.

Mars Wagar was educated (math, Latin, Greek) but found backwoods life hard; urged on by neighbor James Nicholson he helped build the first log schoolhouse and gave land for the first church. His four sons farmed nearby and many grandchildren became Lakewood's earliest teachers.
